Visionary Green Inspiration

BY THE JAG

The elevated NYC visionary architectural High Line park, which has certainly transformed Westside Manhattan, gave quite the show last Tuesday with it’s “inflatable sculptures” to announce the grand expansion (second set) to be completed for next spring. The inauguration event sculptures were designed by FriendsWithYou, an art collective from Miami, in collaboration with AOL. The three dozen rainbow-colored blowup creatures were a large scale interactive installation, that made it fun for all adults and children; all visitors had a blast punching, squeezing and playing catch with them.

The extension sketches 10 blocks towards 30th street, doubling the length of the first set, designed by landscape artist James Corner Field Operations and hipster starchitects Diller Scofidio & Renfro. This second set has new features from the already impressing ones. These include: a “spur” or seating area with a frame to overlook 26th street that makes a remembrance of billboards, a viewing platform where the concrete will be stripped away revealing the girders that support the entire structure, a “flyover” that will rise above the High Line’s level and into the shady canopy of sumac trees and a 4,900 square foot lawn, which is a much more user friendly for lounging and bleacher seating too.

Will be eagerly expecting next spring...
